It was neat to see your question. I am fifty and have been teaaching high school for twenty five years but worked this year with a wonderful lady who is also fifty and went back to school to get her teaching credentials after having worked as a social worked for many years. She filled in for another teacher for one semester this year and it did not take long for the administration to notice that her maturity and life experience made her someone they wanted on the staff. Word got out and she has has a number of offers so go for it. The only word of caution I would have is that this job does not get easier as you get older. Depending on the demographics of the area where you teach, their teacher can be, for some students their only positive role model and the job can be very fullfilling and at times, a little heartbreaking. If you have the passion....go for it and good luck

Bev Conolly agony auntIf the classifieds in Sydney are any guide, you'd be snapped up quickly. Secondary schools are always desperate for teachers. Age is no barrier, and, let's be realistic: at 50 you have another 10-15 years of full-time work ahead of you. Though to be fair, teaching, like nursing, is an underpaid profession. If you can live with the salary, then...

Go for it!

A female reader, anonymous, writes (20 June 2006):

Teachers are usually in demand, particularly in sciences and maths so I don't think your age is a problem. An alternative would be to look at teaching in further or higher education on teacher training courses or degrees in education - lots of lecturers will come from your background, and your age + experience maybe seen as an asset.
