 Get experience through unviersities and colleges by offering to do it for free. Once you have done it for free, get letters of recommendations, and THEN apply to bigger venues.
Most young music bands would LOVE someone to be a greeter at the door. Volunteer your Thurs, Fri and Sat nights to their performances, and get referecnes there too.
