Three years ago I was working in a call center and I felt trapped and hated it. Guess what I do now? Three years later, I graduated from law school and am a successful attorney.
What people don't realize is that when you go to school, you get FINANCIAL AID!! People always make the excuse that they can't afford school, but the truth is you take out loans to afford it and when you get out of school, you're making the big dollars and paying a few hundred a month for loans is really not a big deal.
If you really want to make a change, I'd suggest taking out a loan and going to school. If you want to work at a gym, it is really not that hard to get one of those jobs. Just show the initiative and walk into every single fitness center with a resume until you get a job. Don't be afraid of rejection, if you apply to 100 jobs, you'll get at least 1...

Move over to a job as a night time security guard. The peace and quiet will help you heal from this past job. It will also free your mind, and give you a chance to read about what career move you want to make next.
Volunteer at a gym one day a week, and learn what you need to learn just for the experience. After 3 months, get a letter of recommendation, and look for paid work in a gym.

To work in a gym isnt a problem, you could easily get a job there if you have experience of some sort in the fitness area. However, if you intend to work fulltime in a health and fitness centre (to offer professional advices to members, etc), and earn more money, Im afraid you'd have to undertake a fitness course. I know a mate who did a distance learning course to be a gym instructor, which means you study at home and take the exams either online or at some fixed venue. Perhaps that could be ideal to you. I should reckon they cost about £400 to £600, depending on the type of course, but its certainly worth every penny if you already know thats the sort of thing you wanna do in the long run!
