A female United Kingdom age 18-21, anonymous writes:

I'm 16 and I've been at college 7 weeks doing 4 AS levels and I've really messed up. When I was applying and so on I had no idea what I wanted to do as a career so I picked to do maths because it was my best subject at the time. Now I'm really struggling with it and all my lecturer says is I might just scrape a D grade if I work my ass off all year and that my friend who I sit by should help me. Now... correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it the lecturers job to help? But she doesn't seem to care as long as I get a pass grade, anything E+. Which, while it's a pass, it isn't great.

I've recently been thinking though and I keep thinking I'd like to do something forensics/criminology, medicine or law. Law I do, along with chemistry and graphic design and I'm fine with all of those. It's just the maths. I want to change to biology so bad but the first exam is at the beginning of Jan. so everyone says it's too late for me to change. I'm stressing so badly about this maths and I don't want to waste the rest of the year just to get an E or D grade when I could do so much better taking a second science and it'd be more relevant to what I want to do. Otherwise I'm not going to get the right grades to do either forensics or medicine.

I'm really beating myself up over this because I was meant to be doing biology in the first place but I changed it to graphic design. Sorry this is so long... I just don't know what I'm going to do now. They've said for my second year I MIGHT be able to do 3 A levels (chem., law and graphic design) plus an AS in biology but universities seem to want A levels in 2 sciences/a science and maths.

Again, sorry it's so long, I just feel like quitting college right now and starting over next September just so I don't have to do this maths AS level.

Jmo agony auntI'm not exactly sure how your school works but maybe you should consider lightening your load as far as courses so you can concentrate on the ones you're doing well in as well as giving yourself some time to figure out what you REALLY want to pursue. I went to school for graphic design (actually, it was a communications design major) at this big deal private college that set me back over $100,000 that I don't have. I didn't even graduate (I had to leave in the middle of my senior year for numerous reasons) and now i have to deal with the repercussions. The thing is, after all was said and done I realized that the career path I had my visions toward for so many years didn't really fit me and I was just going through the motions until the shit hit the fan. I don't want to see anyone else go through that before it's too late and while I don't think you should quit school, you should take a step back and think about what it really is that you want to commit the rest of your life to.

I could say a lot more but I think you get the picture. If you ever want some more specific advice, feel free to e-mail me at [email address blocked]. Seriously, I empathize with your situation and anything I can do to help I gladly will. Otherwise, I wish you the best and hold in there.
