writes: I am 25 yr old guy working in a IT company as a QC person. I have suffered a fall in my life right when i was about to begin my career in that i got depressed for some personal problem. My first job paid me fair enough salary but i always carried bad feelings about the workplace and had job dissatisfaction. I ended up quitting that job and went for further studies in a desperation to get a better job. After doing MBA, i had a breakdown as i couldn't get the kind of job i was looking for. After some therapy and medication i started working again. Right now i am back in IT industry but paid much less than my previous job. However, my current employer hired me knowing that i had a mental illness and supported me during the crisis period. Now i feel that i can do much more and i have discussed this with my manager. Unfortunately, i am not getting challenging assignments and now i also feel a need for raise. My manager promised me a raise and a better position in 3 months time. Now my question is, if my managers don't keep their promise, is it ok for me to move on and find a job with better salary and career prospects? I feel a sort of obligation to work for the current employer who had been so much considerate for me in bad times. But at the same time i don't want to stagnate for the sake of loyalty. Please advice. Reply to this Question |

Its hard to imagine that you're not being paid averagely well considering you have an MBA. I think the reason you're not being paid well is partly because your current employer knows you have a mental illness, and he probably worries thats a liability to the company. Whatever it is, you should be paid according to what you're capable of.
Im digressing, so anyway, yes, of course its right for you to switch jobs! Firstly, youre only in your early 20s and you havent switched jobs all that many times yet, so its ok (its not good to job hop). Loyalty you say? Well, if someone else is willing to pay you 3 times more than what you're earning now plus give you a job that suits you more, will you still be loyal? Being loyal to your company is one thing, but you should take on opportunities when they knock on your door, as they dont usually come by. But whatever it is, before you make any decision, you need to have at least secured an offer with a different company, who pays you better! I dont think you should treat it as an obligation, they certainly arent!! Its your life, not theirs. Do you think your company will help you out financially if you got yourself in financial trouble? Do you think theyd bail you out of trouble when you're say, 30 years old? Of course they wont, as you're not theyre obligation, so start thinking for yourself! You dont owe others and its the same otherwise!
