Do you want to work in application support? Do you want to work with networks and cabling? Databases? Server maintenance? PCs and desktop? I suggest you look at job adverts to see what's available and what appeals. Accreditation is a very good idea - there's a lot of free info on the net. Have a looking at Microsoft's elearning pages.

If it is possible, you need some kind of qualification to show you are interested in pursuing a job in this industry. Either look for a qualification at your local college, or look to more industry known qualifications such as the "A+" qualifications, or the microsoft ones (assuming you want to work with MS) The later two qualifications are very costly; so I advice you get a basic diploma or similar from your local college.
Once you have this, you are far more likely to get a job as a trainee or junior within the IT industry. This industry is very, very competitive, and your first job is likely to be low paid, and probably involve simple job responsibilities. However; with experience you have the potential to earn a lot of money working in I.T. you need to have the patience though to get enough years experience to understand how the industry and recruitment process operates.
Stay determined, be prepared for a lot of set-backs - but remain focused and once you're in - if you work hard, and keep up to date with the evolution of technology you can be very successful working in I.T.
Good luck.
