reader, anonymous, writes (2 November 2006): If you are under 23 you can do a degree in psychology, or a related undergraduate degree.
If you are 23 or over, you can do a foundation course in counseling skills at a local college, or there are a few online institutions that offer these courses, they are usually a few hundred pounds. They usually last for around a year and you'll be given an introduction in to counseling and all the various "types" of counseling that is used nowadays; very interesting and afterwards you'll know for certain if you wish to pursue that line of work.
From this course, you can continue studying and eventually study at degree level, if you wish. There is also the matter of employment. Do you live in the UK? The NHS is the largest employer if you wish to work in the public sector. You may choose to operate your own practice. You'll probably specialise in a particular type of counseling for a certain type of person. You'll quickly realise which kind of people you are best at helping.
Hope it's been of some help
Peter
