I'm rapidly appoaching fifty and need a new direction in life.Spent most of it employed in semi-skilled work or starting supposed perfect career choices finding them less than perfect.I have many interests,no kids,no ties-the world is my oyster;so why am i so undecided on future prospects?

A female reader, anonymous, writes (11 September 2006):

I had a similar experience at age 49. I left a ten year career with one of the largest & most well respected companies in the world (Nokia) to join a very small film industry company. I still do similar work, but its much more suited to my personality. I guess what I'm saying is that you can take your current skills and apply them at a different level or different type of work environment and bring the joy back in to what you are best at doing. However, if there is something you've been wanting to do that really creates a spark - go for it. Write out all the pros and cons. I found that no matter how many of each I have, I figure out what I really want to do using this method. Good luck and be true to yourself.

willywombat agony auntWhat do you enjoy most in life?

Take it from there.

I am a registered nurse, aged 35 and have always wanted to study psychology....so last year I bit the bullet and registered on a degree course with a view to becoming a clinical psychologist...will probably be in my early 40's by the time I qualify.

The main thing is not thinking you are *too old*...there is no such thing. Next, find something you enjoy and will willingly spend time studying or working at to become good at. Thirdly don't think about it for too long just go for it. I have found sitting round thinking about things leads to more sitting round thinking about things! Go for it, as you ahve said the world is your oyster.....
