A male , anonymous writes:

I have been working in I.T dept with my current company for the last 4 yrs,i have an honors degree in software development, but my current position in software validation is only contract and it will finish the end of 2006. With the demands of a mortgage and getting married next year, I would rather get a new position with a new company as my current does not have job security and are going quite bad lately, after leaving alot of employees go etc.

What are my chances of finding a position in IT out their at present? What would be the best thing to do in my situation? If I stay where I am, i will end up working back in the manufacturing area of my company when it took me 4 yrs to work up to where I am (this I dont want as I would be working on shifts) or try get a job in IT outside this company altogether?

Any advise would be much appreciated! Thanks.

Dr Pete agony auntAre you familiar with jobserve.com?

This is one of the best recruitment websites for I.T. I can understand why you would prefer a permanent position - and I am sure you will find plenty of jobs that fit your skill set on that site.

It's a very dog-eat-dog industry. You really need to know how to sell yourself these days, if recruitment agents don't feel your confidence on the telephone, they simply won't even put you forward for an interview - it can seem very harsh. Put together an astounding CV and start making some phone calls. Don't feel rude pestering recruitment agencies, it has to be done if you want them to consider you first for jobs that they get. Another thing to mention is that a lot of development work is out-sourced to third-world countries nowadays, this is another reason why you really have to sell yourself. You have to show why employing you would be better than employing someone on the other side of the world. It's not the industry it used to be; but if you have a fighting confident spirit; you will meet the challenge.

Good luck!
