I'm thinking of studying computer science at Uni. Is working in IT boring, is it just full of geeks and what sort of jobs can you get involved in?

Thanks!!!

--Nicki-- agony auntDo you find IT boring? That’s the most important question you have to ask yourself, there’s no point in going into a career if you don't have a good interest in the subject!

There are loads of career opportunities for IT as DrPsych has mentioned. You could also go into teaching the subject (IT teachers are in demand).

My best Wishes

DrPsych agony auntWorking in IT doesn't have to mean being slumped over a terminal programming 24 hours a day but if you want to go into the programming side then you really need to be strong in the field of mathematics and logical analysis. I started a computing degree many years ago but I couldn't handle the 'discrete maths' which were so discrete I couldnt understand any of it! I swapped to another degree and ended up doing a PhD in clinical research - my point is that you have to have an aptitude for some types of computing work and maybe you should get tested by a careers service to make sure you are heading in the right direction.

I think the programming side is considered 'computer science' whereas the IT side of things is the human side of machines. There are plenty of opportunities in IT support and software support (like systems analysis) if you want to use your interpersonal skills or combine IT with business management. As for the 'geeks' image of computers...sure it is true to some extent but I personally find geeky people quite interesting - well at least their interested in something other than soap operas or celebrity gossip...people who call others 'geeks' tend to be jealous of their intellectual abilities as much as anything else.

Fortunately, I am in the creative side of the IT industry. Stress is a HUGE aspect of developers and engineers in the IT field. Some of my co-workers wake up at 6am, head to work by 7am, and work about 10 hours straight with lunch in-between.

Mind you, they've been programming since they were 7 or 8 years of age. If you aren't passionate about your field in the IT industry, then you will most likely be treading through your job disliking it very much.

Pros: The web is where it's at and if you know about the technology and how it all fits together, the world is your oyster.

Cons: There are geeks but geeks are cool.
