You didn't say what kind of job you actually wanted - I have assumed you want to be an IT trainer??
You can do this freelance, but it could be tough without experience. But have you thought about VSO? They often need IT experts. You also don't mention whether you have a house, wife, kids etc which means this sort of stuff can be a lot harder.
Anyway, the VSO thing would provide experience with bells on and be hugely rewarding. There are also shorter term projects on websites such as 'gap year for grown ups' which could give you a leg up on the experience ladder.
And, don't be too proud to take a job at a lower level if it'll get you a foot in the door, esp in a bigger company where you can then move internally - it's a lot easier than coming from an external position.
Good luck!

Also, if you've conquered dyslexia this far, are you not in a good position to work in that area? Good luck.

Down size your living conditions. If you own a large house sell it and buy a small one outright. Pay off all debt that you have with the profits. If you owe on your car sell it and get a used car you can buy outright.
Then you are in a position to pick and choose any job, you have time to explore jobs just for fun. You could even opt for a paid internship like a university kid.
It is the debt and high income demands of the middle aged employees that make the job market seem harsh. A company can higher for the same job a young graduate right out of school for half what an in debt high income employee needs.
