Any ideas what I can do?

A female United States age 30-35, NJmomabear writes:

I have been in credit and collections for 5 years in order to support myself and my daughter as a single mom. Its really the only thing that paid the bills with my high school eductation. However, I'm finding that the medicine I took to treat ADD I'm not able to tolerate. Yet, I find myself drifting when I was working without my medication. So, I started this career that I can't sustain without medication...that's just great. On top of that, last yr I worked 2 jobs to dodge homelessness and ended up with an injured ankle for 6 months that I couldn't see a doctor for cos I had no insurance. That on top of two herniated discs and weight gain...I really can't sit for long periods of time. These days I'm finding I can't do anything for long periods of time that would facilitate being employed. I have 6 weeks left before my unemployment runs out to decide how to help keep a roof over my head.

Other options I'm considering is working from home if I could find something legit, or doing something that I love like make-up. Maybe working at Sephora, but not sure I could hack being on my feet that long with weak ankles and the weight. I also considered something more interactive and ADD friendly like being a receptionist. Sure I'll only make 10 bucks an hour but I'm hoping it will be steady, then again there in that idea lies another problem. I dont have anymore work clothing because of the weight I gained when I hurt my ankle.

I'm so lost and really can't advocate for myself. I really don't think anyone around me realizes the severity of trouble my mental/physical condition is giving me, even if I told them they probably wouldn't know what to do with me. I sure as heck don't.

A male reader, Frank B Kermit Canada +, writes (20 June 2007):

Frank B Kermit agony auntDO you have any family that you can send your daughter to live with while you get your stuff in order? That might be a first step.

Next, if clothes are an issue, look for work that will provide you with a uniform, so you do not have to worry about it. What jobs would need you to have a uniform?

Maybe something at night (like desk security) so that you do not have to deal with lots of people.

While on unemployment, you could be taking courses that the government might pay for. Some basic computer skills might land you that job at home (like writing or editing) and you could work flexibel hours on your own time.

If you can type, spell, write...you could be editing text for websites and such, or student essays, etc...and you could work from home, take breaks as you need them, no work clothes, as long as you meet the dealines.
